  • 1999 The Japanese indie scene mourns former Super Junky Monkey lead vocalist Mutsumi Fukuhara (born Takahashi), after the singer apparently falls from the balcony of her apartment in Osaka. Fukuhara, 28, had recently left the band to devote time to her husband and their 1-year-old son.
  • 1998 Carl Wilson, one of the founding members of the Beach Boys, dies from complications of lung cancer. Wilson, 51, who had been battling the disease for nearly a year dies in Los Angeles with his family reportedly by his side.
  • 1998 Falco, the ‘80s technopop artist best known for his “Rock Me Amadeus” song and video, dies in a traffic accident in the Dominican Republic. He is 40. The Austrian-born singer/songwriter, born Johann Holzel, suffers a severe head injury when his sport utility vehicle collides with a bus as he pulls onto the highway.
  • 1995 Bob Marley’s backup singers, the I-Threes, reunite for a 50th birthday concert for the late reggae pioneer at the Bob Marley museum in Jamaica. Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers also perform.
  • 1994 Nirvana embarks on their final tour of Europe.
  • 1990 Billy Idol breaks his arm and leg when his motorcycle crashes after he allegedly ran a stop sign in Hollywood. He had been coming from the recording studio, where he was working on the album “Charmed Life.”
  • 1987 No. 1 Billboard Pop Hit: “Open Your Heart,” Madonna. Songwriters Gardner Cole and Peter Rafelson originally called the song “Follow Your Heart.”
  • 1981 Hugo Montenegro dies of emphysema. Age 55.
  • 1977 No. 1 Billboard Pop Hit: “Torn Between Two Lovers,” Mary MacGregor. The artist says she hates the song and finds the situation in it “implausible.”
  • 1950 Singer Natalie Cole is born in Los Angeles, the second of singer Nat “King” Cole’s five children. “Unforgettable,” a tribute to her father, is her biggest album, reaching No. 1 in 1991.
  • 1945 Reggae star Bob Marley is born in St. Ann’s, Jamaica, the son of a British Army captain and a Jamaican. He records with his Jamaican band, the Wailers.
  • 1943 Teen idol Fabian (Fabiano Forte) is born in Philadelphia. He only releases two albums, both in 1959. He begins his acting career the same year with “Hound Dog Man.”
