  • 1999 Legendary Los Angeles nightclub the Whisky A Go-Go begins a weeklong slate of concerts to mark its 35th anniversary. The concerts feature acts who have previously played the venue. Included in the festivities are the Grass Roots, the Robby Krieger Band, Johnny Rivers, Nancy Sinatra, Randy Bachman, Jan & Dean, and Martha Reeves.
  • 1999 Trisha Yearwood gets a special proposal on the same stage where she was married in 1994. After Yearwood, making a guest appearance on the historic Ryman Auditorium stage, finishes her first song, Grand Ole Opry member and segment host Ricky Skaggs invites her to become the 71st member of the Opry cast. She quickly accepts.
  • 1999 Ol’ Dirty Bastard, the oft-busted rapper, pleads not guilty to charges of attempted murder in the first degree, attempted murder in the second degree and two counts of criminal weapons possession. Police say he fired at undercover cops, then fled in his SUV after he was stopped for a traffic violation on a Brooklyn street. Police can’t find the gun.
  • 1998 The Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah cancels the premiere of Nick Broomfield’s documentary “Kurt and Courtney,” about late Nirvana leader Kurt Cobain and his widow, Courtney Love. A statement issued by the festival says that the film is yanked due to “unresolved legal matters between the filmmaker and others – including uncleared music rights.”
  • 1996 Wayne Newton performs his 25,000th Vegas show. Newton had already performed more shows as a headliner on Las Vegas’ famed Strip than any other entertainer in the city’s history. He first headlined on the Strip at the Fremont Hotel in 1959.
  • 1995 No. 1 Billboard Pop Hit: “On Bended Knee,” Boyz II Men.
  • 1983 No. 1 Billboard Pop Hit: “Down Under,” Men at Work. The song holds at No. 1 for three weeks, drops behind Toto’s “Africa,” then reclaims the top spot for one week.
  • 1979 Cher and Greg Allman are divorced.
  • 1976 “Donny & Marie,” a one-hour music variety show, premieres on ABC-TV.
  • 1970 Police close an exhibition of John Lennon’s lithographs at a London gallery for alleged obscenity.
  • 1959 Sade Adu (Helen Folasade Adu) is born in Ibadan, Nigeria.
  • 1957 Arturo Toscanini dies of natural causes. Age 89.
  • 1928 Singer Pilar Lorengar is born Pilar Loranza Garcia.
  • 1902 Composer Evelyn Levine is born.
