  • 2000 Rapper Black Rob (Robert Ross) surrenders to authorities in New York and is charged with the felony of criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree. The charges stem from a May 21 arrest for weapons possession. Ross is arrested when he stops his car in Manhattan to sign an autograph, and nearby police officers see him pass a pistol to a passenger in the car.
  • 2000 Gordon ”Sting“ Sumner files a complaint with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) over the rights to the domain name www.sting.com, alleging that a Marietta, Ga.-based man had registered the URL and offered to sell it back to him for $25,000.
  • 1998 Lightning strikes more than twice at the Tibetan Freedom Concert in Washington – to disastrous effect. Numerous people in the huge crowd are injured and the multi-act show is halted as heavy rain pours down on RFK Stadium. A 25-year-old woman is the most seriously injured from the lightning strikes.
  • 1995 Country star Ty Herndon is arrested by an undercover cop on a charge of drug possession – 90 minutes before he is to perform at a Texas police convention. He pleads guilty.
  • 1986 Big band leader Benny Goodman dies of a heart attack at the age of 77.
  • 1984 The Jacksons’ “State of Shock,” with Mick Jagger doing guest vocals, is released. The million-seller reaches No. 3 on Billboard’s Hot 100.
  • 1975 John Lennon makes his last TV appearance to sing “Imagine.” He retires soon after to become a househusband and raise his son Sean.
  • 1972 Clyde McPhatter, the first lead singer of the Drifters, dies at the age of 38. He leaves the group before it hits it big.
