- 1954 Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys is born in Northumberland, England. The group’s first big single is “West End Girls,” a No. 1 song in 1986.
- 1947 Balladeer Arlo Guthrie is born in Coney Island, N.Y., the son of folk singer Woody Guthrie. His most famous song is the 18-minute Thanksgiving tale “Alice’s Restaurant.”
