- 2000 Kenny Chesney makes a hometown appearance in Luttrel, Tenn. During an assembly held in his honor at Gibbs High Scholl, the country singer is greeted by local dignitaries and faculty from his former school. Sept. 19 is declared “Kenny Chesney Day” in Knox County. A former basketball coach recalls making the singer run laps, and a math teacher laments that she had not kept his old papers to sell as autographs.
- 1997 For the first time ever, the VH1 music series, “Storytellers” is aired live. The show, featuring Elton John, is a special 90-minute edition and is broadcast from the House of Blues in New Orleans.
- 1997 Contemporary Christian artist Rich Mullins dies in a car accident in LaSalle County, Ill. He is 41. A 12-time Dove Award nominee with nine albums under his belt, Mullins is signed to Amy Grant’s Myrrh label at the time of his death.
