  • 2000 Rapper Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, is indicted in New York Criminal Court on two assault charges stemming from the Dec. 1 stabbing of record executive Lance “Un” Rivera.
  • 1999 Two members and the road manager of hit Tejano band Intocable are killed in a car crash outside of Monterey, Mexico. The are Jose Angel “Pepe” Farias, 23 the band’s onstage MC; Silvestre Rodriguez Jr., 26, the bassist; and road manager Joe Angel Gonzalez, age unknown. Lead singer/founder Ricky Munoz and other bandmembers are injured and kept overnight at a Monterey hospital.
  • 1999 Reba McEntire closes her first European tour with a sold-out performance in Munich, Germany.
  • 1998 The Presidents of the United States of America play their final show at Seattle’s Paramount Theatre. The show benefits the Chicken Soup Brigade, which provides food and services to Seattle residents with HIV/AIDS.
  • 1984 No. 1 Billboard Pop Hit: “Karma Chameleon,” Culture Club. The song is the group’s biggest hit in England and only No. 1 single in the U.S.

  • 1956 Johnny Rotten (John Lydon) of the Sex Pistols is born. The group plays a large role in making punk rock popular in the 1970s.
  • 1951 Harold Wayne Casey of K.C. & the Sunshine Band is born in Hialeah, Fla. The group has five No. 1 songs in the 1970s.
