  • 2000 Beatrice Rutman, the mother of Bob Dylan, dies in St. Paul, Minn at the age of 84.
    2000 “Deep Purple In Concert With The London Symphony Orchestra Conducted By Paul Mann,” a double live CD of Deep Purple’s orchestral concerts at London’s Royal Albert Hall on Sept. 25 and 26 is released in the U.K.
  • 2000 The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) launches its “Los Premios De Oro Y Platino” certification program for Spanish-language product at the Raleigh Hotel in Miami Beach, Fla. The new certifications signify sales of 100,000 for a discos de oro cert and 200,000 for a discos de platino cert.
  • 1999 Paul McCartney launches a crusade against British radio and TV stations over the banning of “The Light Comes From Within,” the final song by his late wife Linda, because it contains language deemed offensive.
  • 1999 Sinead O’Connor, the Irish singer and talker, advises the U.S. Senate to stop “wasting money… in a starving world” on the trial of Bill Clinton. In a letter in the Irish Times, she asks: “Does impeachment mean they’re gonna turn him into a peach? If so, can I eat him?”
  • 1999 Internationally esteemed choral conductor and educator Robert Shaw dies of a stroke in New Haven, Conn. He is 82. A winner of 14 Grammy Awards, Shaw received his latest nomination for a 1999 Telarc disc of Barber, Bartok, and Vaughan Williams with his longtime associates, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra & Chorus.
  • 1996 Rolling Stone readers choose Live as artist of the year, critics choose PJ Harvey in the magazine’s annual poll. The people choose Smashing Pumpkins’ “Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness” as album of the year; the critics choose PJ Harvey’s “To Bring You My Love.”
